‘Mega’ Moments From Cannes

Copola Got 4-Minute Standing Ovation Upon Entering And For 3-Minutes After The Credits

After watching the ‘shocking’ scenes: a doctored sex tape starring Adam Driver, Shia LaBeouf in drag and seeing Aubrey Plaza walking past a slew of men — from the Francis Ford Coppola’s two hour and 20 minutes dystopian drama Megalopolis — the audience at Cannes was divided with its mixed bag reviews for the film. And yet, the Oscar-winning Godfather director earned a huge respect from the audience — a four-minute standing ovation upon entering the room, which continued for three minutes after the credits rolled at the end of the film. Even as the film confuses its audience and critics alike, there still remains a point that the film will move beyond the red carpet and film festivals to cinema houses, only for the name Francis Ford Coppola.

Conservation conversations

Debutant filmmaker Shonet Anthony Barretto’s real-life events-inspired film Avni Ki Kismat starring Sanjay Suri and Ashlesha Thakur in lead roles is all set to be showcased at the 77th Cannes Film Festival 2024. Speaking about the premiere of the movie, Sanjay shared: “I am happy that our film Avni Ki Kismat directed by Shonet is being screened. Avni Ki Kismat, is a beautiful film with its heart in the right place, and I am sure whenever it’s released in India, it will connect with our audiences.” Shonet said: “As a filmmaker, it is both an honour and a privilege to have Avni Ki Kismat showcased at the esteemed Cannes Film Festival 2024.” He continued, “This film is not just a cinematic endeavour; it is a heartfelt portrayal of the complexities surrounding human-wildlife interaction and the urgent need for conservation efforts,” he added. It is a poignant tale inspired by real-life events, depicting the struggles of villagers living near a forest in Maharashtra who perceive tigress Avni as responsible for human fatalities. However, the arrival of a conservationist from the city and village leaders heralds a new perspective, advocating for the protection of wildlife and fostering coexistence between humans and animals.

Surti ponkh served at Cannes

The first event at the 77th Cannes Film Festival 2024, held on at the Côte d’Azur (France), Bharat pavilion brought together an interesting mix and exploration into regional Indian culinary flavours, curated by Chef Varun Totlani. Of the five-course dinner served, the second course was chaat. Yes, you read that right! A charred ponkh and corn chaat featuring bright green roasted jowar millet, found exclusively in Surat and the surrounding areas was served to the guests. As per Totlani, as ponkh went out of season about a month or so back, they preserved it for dinner, by frying it, to maintain its crispiness.

Sunanda promoted Punjabi culture

Punjabi singer and actress Sunanda Sharma promoted Punjabi culture at Cannes. Dressed in exquisite traditional Punjabi attire, she showcased the rich heritage of Punjab. The singer wore an ivory-coloured salwar kameez. She completed her look with a nose ring and a maang teeka. Sunanda said: “Being here is not just a personal achievement, but a victory for the entire Punjabi community.

The OG Cannes queen is back!

The ‘queen of Cannes’, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan made a grand entry for the premiere of Megalopolis and stole the spotlight on the red carpet. The actress turned ‘lady in black’ once again as she donned a Falguni Shane Peacock gown. The dramatic monochrome gown was adorned with 3D metallic elements and golden accents. It showcased a corset-inspired silhouette and a floor-sweeping train. She exuded glamour even though she donned a white cast on her right hand.
